Mile High City
Denver in Color
The air may be thin in the mile-high city, but that isn’t why Denver takes folks' breath away so easily when they first visit. When many Black pioneers first visited Colorado during the gold rush, they saw an opportunity to create something special and unique for themselves. Over 200 years later, their descendants have realized that dream of a connected, emboldened, and economically emergent Black community.
When you look at the origins of Black townships in Colorado, pride, purpose, and independence have been key forces for residents’ resilience. You can see the legacy of Black settlements like Dearfield in our museums. Institutions like the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center remind us all that many cowboys were Black. But beyond the flattening of our stories in Westerns, we must demonstrate how Black people have always been part of the broader American story.

For decades, redlining and segregation forced the city’s Black residents into the Five Points neighborhood. But rather than resent this, they built a "city within a city" that became a national beacon for jazz and entrepreneurship. World-class entertainment venues like the Rossonian Hotel in Five Points gave luminaries such as Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday a home when white hotels refused them business.
You owe it to yourself to experience Denver’s Juneteenth Music Festival in Five Points. It’s one of the oldest and largest in the country. Drawing over 100,000 people to celebrate freedom with the best food and bass lines in the region, it has a Denver flair that the rest of the country lacks. And if you’re here in January, the "Marade"—Denver’s massive MLK Day march and parade—is a testament to the potency of Black political organizing in Colorado overall.
Denver is the ultimate "if you know, you know" city. It’s a place where you can find the serenity of the mountains in the morning and the electric rhythm of a historic jazz district at night. But you can’t get the true Mile High experience from a tour bus; you have to spend authentic time on Welton Street, catching the vibe of a community that is simultaneously preserving its past and building a vibrant, booming future. Whether you’re looking for a fresh start in a city where Black innovation is part of the foundation or just a weekend that feeds your soul, Denver is waiting for you to discover its hidden heights. Come for the views, but stay for the rhythm—you might just realize it's the perfect pace and place.
